Bridge Constructions
Midlands & Wimmera
Road & Bridge was engaged by DEECA, and it involved the design and construction of two new bridges in Licola.
The two bridge designs differed to suit the site conditions and hydraulic requirements. The first bridge was a 15-metre-long pre-tensioned plank bridge with an in-situ reinforced concrete deck, while the second structure was an 11-metre-long post-tensioned plank bridge.

Both bridges were designed to meet AS5100 loads, ensuring reliability for forestry and emergency vehicles. Due to the importance of this road, side tracks were built at both bridges to maintain all public access during construction, they were remediated after, including reinstatement of property fences. Construction works included the demolition and removal of the existing bridge structures, installation of driven piles, construction of in-situ reinforced concrete abutments, bearing plinths and placement of precast concrete planks.
For the larger bridge, a cast in-situ deck was poured to complete the superstructure. Associated works included the installation of bridge railing systems, construction of sealed approach pavements, and installation of guardrail and other road safety furniture. These bridges were required to open prior to bushfire season, therefore were fully constructed in seven weeks total.
Sandy Pinch Bridge was part of a larger package of work for DEECA, however, it was significant as it was constructed between April and May 2024 just outside of Beaufort, not long after bushfires had affected the area. All staff working on the project were required to undertake Basic Wildfire Awareness Training. Road & Bridge also implemented comprehensive site access and emergency response procedures to ensure the safety of personnel and protection of the recovering environment.
